I bought Rick Steve's Great Britain Travel book before leaving the states, not because he had Manchester, listed in the book (it doesn't) but because of all of the helpful tips and advice in the book, I know I'll be using it carefully for my trips into London. The books are updated each year and include a map. I'd also recommend checking out his travel show on PBS, the episodes broadcast now are the ones filmed this year.
84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff
This may be my favorite book about London. I can only describe it as charming. This is a real collection of letters written by a women in New York to a Bookseller in London between 1949 and 1969 and the friendship they formed. It's very short, but witty and just lovely. It was made into a very good movie in 1987. Be sure to read ll of Helene's book as they describe what happens after this book.
